Heritage in the Aviation Industry
The Nebraska ARMES Aviation Maintenance Facility, and its story:
Since the days of World War II, when Tullahoma Regional Airport (KTHA) was still the sprawling U.S. Army Air Base - William Northern Field, the T-201 Aircraft Hangar has stood as an iconic image of U.S. Military Industrial influence in Tennessee.
In 1941, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began constructing the Tullahoma Army Air Base, which would act as an auxiliary facility to supplement the massive training program at Camp Forrest Army training base, nearby in Tullahoma, and the Smyrna Army Airfield. The T-201 Aircraft Hangar directly supported the base’s military training activities by providing a space for the instruction of aircraft operation and maintenance. At its peak, the Tullahoma Army Air Base covered 1,300 acres and included more than 100 buildings, almost all of which were dismantled after the end of World War II. The T-201 Aircraft Hangar is now the only surviving World War II-era aircraft hangar at the field.
After years of heavy use, followed by decades of neglect, the hangar had fallen into a state of dilapidation. Its wooden roof had rotted, many of the doors' glass panes had been destroyed, and water and vegetation had intruded into the building. It had become an eyesore on the airfield and talks of demolition were being considered. In 2019, a locally operated general aviation maintenance company, Williamson Aviation, purchased the facility and began work on total restoration. Two years and $1.3M dollars later, the building was officially recommissioned, and was soon added to the National Register of Historic Places, once again labelled T-201 Aircraft Hangar, in June 2021.
The establishment of ARMES Aviation in Tullahoma began in late August 2024, when the first shipments of equipment rolled through the airport gates. After a several-month-long process of unpacking, sorting, stocking, and remodeling, NAA has been able to march into the new year at full operational capacity. We are excited to continue the legacy of our new base of operations, and to explore the many new business opportunities granted by this transition.
